What do the Europeans and the Japanese have in common? A love for efficiency. This is why the ductless mini split systems are in much greater use by those countries than they are in the USA today. In America the usual approach is to install a ductless system only if the home doesn’t support traditional HVAC technology, such as an older home. But all this is quickly changing.

What is a Ductless Mini-Split System?

Ductless mini-splits are heating and cooling units that have been around for about 30 years. They consist of a single exterior air condenser/heat pump, which are relatively small in size, allowing them to be installed in small easily shaded places. The connecting conduit delivers liquid to the indoor distribution unit, where a fan blows air over the coils to heat and cool the space.

The exterior unit can supply as many as 4 interior distribution units, allowing you to set different temperatures for each zone/room of your home.

Why the Mini Split Systems Are So Efficient

Typical forced air HVAC systems are known to lose up to 20-30% of cooling and heating efficiency through leaks in the duct work. The mini-split distribution units don’t have that problem. They also give you complete control over what rooms you want to heat or cool. Other mini-split system benefits include:

  • Enhanced Energy Efficiency due to no lost energy through duct work.
  • Improved Security when you remove the a/c window units, which can be vulnerable to intruders.
  • Noise Reduction because the condenser units are outside & there is no ductwork running through the house.
  • Lower Energy Costs due to better efficiency and more control.
  • No Duct Work which means this is ideal for older homes that can’t be retrofitted with a traditional HVAC system

Not only can you control the temperature for each room, but you can have the A/C turned off in the bedroom for the entire day while you are in the kitchen and the living room. Then when it’s time to go to bed, you can simply turn the bedroom on and the rest of the house off. This can help you save a significant amount in your heating and cooling operation costs.
